Lucid Dreams – How to Induce
People who want to have lucid dreams usually in most cases find themselves stuck at simply remembering their dreams, sometimes they can’t even do that. Several emotions take over them and they simply give up with no hope. What these people do not understand is that lucid dreaming is a forgotten technique that everyone has the ability to do, they just haven’t trained their mind to do so. It’s the same idea as saying you want to be a carpenter and expecting to build a house on the first day of the job, unless you are a natural lucid dreamer it will take time and practice to actually accomplish these things.
Even natural lucid dreamers most of the time have to practice these techniques because there is a difference between having lucid dreams here and there, and being able to induce it whenever you want too, which takes lots of practice. There are many techniques that have been discovered to work best, I have tried them all and I am currently experimenting with some more to see which ones work best for me, and you will have to do the same because everyone is different.
To start let’s look at some ways we can help ourselves throughout the day and before going to sleep to induce the state of lucid dreaming, these are not all the ways just some that are very important and easy to work with for beginners.
Here are some steps you must take before you begin to attempt lucid dreaming, without most of these lucid dreaming comes out to be almost impossible to do on command, or several times a week.
1. Wanting to have Lucid Dreams
If you are serious about lucid dreaming you have to create the proper mindset to actually have a lucid dream at first.
Always affirm to your self that you can lucid dream, it is easy, or simply say I will lucid dream tonight and I will remember my dreams. Investigate this dream phenomena more, search how dreams happen, why they happen, what happens to your brain, it is very important to understand the key fundamentals so you can actually understand what is happening while you are going through stages such as beta, alpha, theta and what key signs are shown. Also gain some knowledge about what happens in dream states, such as the lucid state, how it can be controlled and what are some areas to watch out for. Believing in yourself constantly is very important and not having any doubt about your ability to enter this state of dreaming. Always stay positive and imagine want kind of dreams you want to have and its purpose without any negative thoughts or emotions coming in the way.
2. Dream Recall
Remembering your dreams is a must, everyone dreams at night even if you don’t remember your dreams.
1. When you wake up its best not move at all, don’t start thinking about anything, and try to keep your eyes closed.
2. Begin to wake up very slowly and allow yourself to recollect the dreams you had and not thinking about anything else at all.
3. Allow you mind to connect the dots of the visual imagery you have in your mind about the dreams you had.
4. Start recognizing what the major symbols were in the dream whether it is people, music, or emotions, try to point out the bigger things that happened such as flying, running or being chased by someone.
5. Remember what you can first and then start remembering what you find difficult to recollect, try closing your eyes and letting your thoughts come to you from your dreams and have that intention to do so as well.
Make sure you are getting plenty of sleep at night and if you have time during the day take several short naps to help you relax. It’s important for the waking up during the night, sometimes several times a night to record all your dreams in detail. To really help you have a great dream recall you should set up an alarm clock to wake you up about 4 to 5 hours into your sleep when you dreams are the longest and you are guaranteed to have. This can be done even several times throughout the last portion of the night to get all the dreams you are having in better detail.
Keeping a dream journal with you is another must have in order to lucid dream. Without this tool you will be missing a lot of links in order to induce the state of lucid dreaming. This tool also increases the chances of you having a lucid dream because you can recall more dreams this way, as long as you create a pattern to record your dreams everyday upon waking. The chances of having a lucid dream after a few weeks with a dream journal just sky rocket and is almost guaranteed withing just a few weeks.
Write in as much detail as possible while keeping a dream journal, always write down your emotions and chain of events in the dream. It doesn’t matter if the dream did not make sense at first or even at all later down the road. The important thing is that you keep writing down your dreams and all the states and feelings and sensations you had while in the dream. Sometimes the dreams won’t only be sub conscious programming being displayed, but it can also be signs or warnings for you future path ahead in your waking life.
It’s best to separate the different dreams you had throughout the night, the way I usually do it is by leaving an empty line before starting the second dream and so on. Another more detailed way is to record titles and dates for the dream, this helps later down the road when you are rereading you dreams and can also help you with you reoccurring symbols task. Another useful way to record dreams is to type them up on the computer using a journal program, this is easier and more efficient for those who type really fast and usually begin their day on the computer. The other way is to simply buy a journal with empty pages and keep track of all the dreams you had page by page.
If you are lazy like me, and most people out there who have to wake up several times a night to record their dreams, keep a scrap book near your counter or night table and keep it open. Leave a pen beside the scrap book that you can reach without using much energy. When I wake up at 3 am I don’t want to open up my journal and half asleep start writing everything that happened, so what I do is write really short key phrases or usually words that symbolize the dream. For example if I had a dream about me walking around a construction site, seeing horses running around, and the day being clear and sunny, I would simply write down ‘construction’ and ‘horse’ and the rest usually comes to my mind upon writing the full copy.
Symbols and Signs
While recording your dreams you will recognize that you become more and more conscious of your sleep state and your awareness in the dream actually grows. With this at hand you are ready to start planning your moves to awaken your lucid dreaming ability. For example I constantly have dreams reoccurring where I’m flying, sometimes falling first, and then flying, so this would for me be a symbol and dream sign to pay attention to while in a dream which will give me the signal to wake up. I even have it written down right now on a stick and I placed it on my monitor so my sub conscious would see it all the time.
Again this is why we emphasize the importance of having a dream journal, if you don’t keep track of your dreams it will be almost impossible to remember all the key signs that keep showing up in your dreams several times a night.
If you are really serious about remembering your dreams it’s important to always remember to do these tasks while awake, and to keep reminding yourself that you will wake up. The mind at night is very hard to control if you forget to practice during the day, all that will do is make you forget during sleep.
The next step to go over again as we mentioned previously is to work with is keeping track of your targets, or as I call them ‘code signals’, which allow you to awaken in a dream. It is one of the most important lessons we must master to actually master lucid dreaming. After that it will become quite natural. So while recording your dream journal every night for say two weeks at the least, open it up and begin to read what aspects or objects or any part of the dream stands out the most for you.
Once you notice all of the significant features write them down on a piece of paper and leave it on your desk for constant reminder, you can also write down beside it the quote “Am I dreaming? Am I awake?” to keep constantly reminding you the question you have to ask in your dream. If you don’t spend a lot of time near a desk, then put it anywhere that you do, if you cook everyday leave a sticky with that near the dishes or while you are washing them. Although the most important thing is to do this in your mind throughout the day, treat it like breathing, always there, always on your mind, and it will be so in a dream.
Understanding the Present
The present state of your mind/consciousness is what has to be developed before you try to get into the sub conscious developing because that is much harder to do while in the sleep state. So practice the states of awareness of sight, sounds, touch, taste, smell, breath, emotions, and thoughts. All these can be looked at very deeply, but on a regular basis we usually never pay much attention to them, well now we have to start. For example your vision (sight) always pay attention to shapes, colours, movement, and imagine the world as a whole to get an entire perspective of this sense. Do this for all of the other senses throughout the day.
Your dream world is exactly the same as your waking world, you just don’t realize that yet. You will have many dreams after understanding the present that will really make you think about what you think is real. There will be dreams that really make you feel as if you are awake, and your day will go about and you will not notice anything different…that is until you actually wake up. In order to really experience dreams this real, and make them lucid so you can create your imaginary world you must practice the ‘understanding the present’ techniques and develop your states of awareness as much as you possibly can.
In this external world things don’t change like they do in the internal world of the mind, the time doesn’t move four hours in 4 seconds, that’s impossible here, but in the dream world it is quite normal and usual to experience if you ever gaze upon the time. The world in a lucid state changes form based on your mind, you are in control of what happens and what appears, this is dependent upon how much you have control of your mind. The more your mind is free in the lucid state, the more you can free yourself from what your brain makes you think is real.
General Techniques in Waking Life
1. Affirm to Remember Your Dreams
in the early morning make sure when you are just waking up and while you begin doing your first tasks during the day confidently clarify that you will remember your dreams and you will be conscious while dreaming. “I remember my dreams, and am conscious while dreaming” While you are going about your days activities pick a certain time that you will ask your self that same question, it could be every hour or every 5 hours, or even just 3 times a day, whatever feels right for you. While asking this question really make your self feel as if though you are actually in a dream world, and look around your environment and notice anything that reminds you of a dream. If you ever notice anything that does remind you of a dream, ask the question no matter what time of the day it is.
Imagining that you are dreaming throughout the day is the second step to take, while going on about your day whether it’s from work or you just finished shopping, visualize yourself asking “Am I dreaming, or am I awake?” at a certain point in the day, such as when you enter your house. And actually do it when you do enter your house and imagine it only being a dream.
3. Dream Signs
Every time you notice anything you have seen in a dream remind your self that you are in a dream, this can be anything from certain type of shoes or a body of water. If you can’t remember anything that sticks out in a dream as significant go to your dream journal and read through it to check. If you have really notice that you are awake and not dreaming, it’s fine, simply keep visualizing that you are dreaming and use your senses to discover anything that looks dream like.
4. Imagining Your Dream
While you are falling asleep or simply have free time picture your dream you want to have that night, try to make it as real as possible and as clear as possible. It is almost like planning your day out, make notes of the things you want to notice and what will awaken you within the dream. It’s a must while going to sleep, because this is when you sub conscious intakes the most information for the dream.
Don’t have all these techniques which are actually really basic overwhelm you, it sometimes feels like it’s a lot of ways to learn, but simply keep coming back and rereading some of the steps, or write it down on sticky notes and affirm them throughout the day.
Practice in Waking Life
The only way I know so far that helped me get to the stages of lucid dreaming much easier is through meditation and growing my awareness, almost like a philosopher questioning his reality and surroundings. Keep the mind still in thoughtless awareness is a great way to build focus and concentrate on something that you want to accomplish, I take this skill when I go to sleep and concentrate on wanting to lucid dream.
And as mentioned over and over again keep affirming to yourself a key phrase through out the day:
-Am I dreaming?
-Am I awake?
-I will lucid dream tonight.
-I am conscious while dreaming.
-I remember my dreams.
